Nitrous Oxide Sedation in Halifax, NS

Do you avoid seeing the dentist because of dental fear or phobia?

If you answered yes, you’re not alone. Dental fear is not uncommon and can be caused by previous negative dental experiences. Although we sympathize with your fear and anxiety, avoiding the dentist isn’t the answer either. Regular dental visits are important to keeping your smile healthy since oral health problems can occur without your knowledge. Decay and gum disease are just some of the oral health problems that can pop up with little to no symptoms. Your dentist can check and treat oral health problems before they can have a serious impact on your oral health.

Dr. Daniel Tam offers a number of sedation methods to alleviate your anxiety and worries and keep you comfortable during your visit. Our two main types of sedation include Nitrous Oxide Sedation and Conscious Sedation.

Nitrous Oxide sedation

Nitrous Oxide sedation - better known as laughing gas - promotes relaxation and comfort during your procedure. It is adminstered through a face mask that is placed over your mouth. As you breathe in the gas, you’ll be put in an elevated state of euphoria and relaxation. All pain and discomfort are drastically reduced. Once the face mask is removed, the sedative effects quickly wear off and you’ll be able to resume your daily activities.

Conscious Sedation

Compared to nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation is given prior to your procedure. You’ll be required to take an oral sedative, usually in liquid form, approximately an hour before your scheduled appointment. When you arrive at our office, you’ll be in a deeply relaxed state. In fact, it’s not uncommon for patients to fall asleep during their procedure since they are so relaxed. Because the sedative effects take longer to wear off, be sure to have someone that you trust to drive you home.

Dr. Daniel Tam will help you to choose the appropriate sedation method for your needs. Contact us in Halifax to learn more about our sedation options.
